 Think Recycle Program

The holidays are fast approaching and the gift giving season creates the perfect opportunity to collect even more cell phones for recycling!

Be sure to let all your friends and family know that you can recycle their old cell phones through the Think Recycle Program offered through DHSBA!! Don't forget to include all your ink and laser cartridges. Each item donated helps to reduce the waste in the landfill sites AND provides more funds for DHSBA to enrich the membership benefits.

For more information, please call Lori Prentice, Durham Plus Paralegal Services at 905-419-1338.

Have a Merry Recycling Christmas!

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE UPDATE

The SPC is getting set to start working in earnest on the 3-Year Strategic Plan this month and your ideas are needed as soon as possible!

We want to welcome Lori Prentice as the new Chair and all of the previous members who have returned: Sue Sutcliffe, Tiffany St-Germain, Paul St-Germain and yours truly, Peter Cluff.

Shortly, we will be breaking down membership and visitor information from prior years to see what trends they offer for Membership ideas going forward. We will also be looking at our competition, events, meeting formats, committees, and a load of other areas where we hope to improve our Association.

This is where all Members come in. Please take a few moments to think about the things you wish the DHSBA would do with its membership [costs, benefits, other?], meetings [costs, formats, speakers, food, networking, other?], events [Trade Show, AGM, other?], awards [BOY, Betty Penny Scholarship, other?], committees and education.

Then either go to the Strategic Planning section of the Forum to post your ideas or email them to me at "criticalpath@interlinks.net".

Once the Committee puts together some basic ideas, we'll float these by you, the DHSBA Members, to see if you support them. After all, it is your Association.

Please look for a Committee update in February.

In the meantime, please have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Peter Cluff

Special Request
Letter from New Think Strategies to DHSBA From: Dean Perrin [mailto:newthinkstrategies@rogers.com]
Sent: November 27, 2008 12:08 PM
To: Sandra Cousins
Subject: Looking for mentors

HI Sandra,
As explained I am assisting Meta Vocational Service in preparing to run a Young Entrepreneur / Mentorship program. - (Meta is a not for profit organization with over 25 years experience assisting people with disabilities, youth and the unemployed) I realize I can contact each member of the Durham Small Business Association individually, however I think it would be a great oportunity for your associaton to grow in the community, I would like your group to consider this opportunity to partner with Meta. I do not expect every one of your members to particiapte, however access to some of your membership would assist us in matching young entrepreneurs with similar minded successful people.

A mentor can be as involved as they want, by providing 1, 3 or upto 12 mentoring sessions for 1, 2 or 3 different youth. A session can be done via email contact, phone or in person. If interested the mentor can have the individual visit their place of work. Even though this is a volunteer commitment for your group, we both know that the time spent mentoring can be a very valuable experience to both the mentor and mentee. I look forward to having the opportunity to talking with you again very soon about this.
With Sincere Appreciation As Always,
Dean Perrin

Newsletter and E-Blast guidelines

Thank you for taking the time to contribute to DHSBA's bi-monthly newsletter.

Please note the following DHSBA newsletter guidelines and suggestions:

1. Less is more
All newsletter articles should be between 400-500 words. Any articles with a word count exceeding 500 words will be edited to fit the newsletter format.

2. Keep your message in mind.
Before you start writing, make a list of the points you wish to make. Your readers are more likely to read the entire article if it maintains a singular focus and doesn't veer off in several directions.

3. Keep it simple
You may know what you're talking about, but if you don't speak in clear, simple terms your reader will be lost. Keep the tone of your article friendly and conversational.

3. Tell us about yourself
Keeping your article under 500 words allows us more room to help you promote your business. When you submit your article, please remember to include a 50-word bio that describes yourself and/or your company.

5.  Grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling
All DHSBA newsletter articles will be proofread and edited by Janet Boccone, a professional writer and editor who uses The Canadian Press Style Book as her guide for all issues concerning grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling.

6. Scheduling
Deciding which articles appear in each issue is a delicate balancing act. It is our goal to have your piece published as quickly as possible; however, the final decision on article scheduling and placement belongs to the editor.

Send newsletter info to: Gary Round        ( Articles, Advertising, President's Msg etc...)
