Betty Penny Scholarship
Betty Penny Scholarship Deadline is May 15th 2009


Background:
Betty Penny is the Founder of the Durham Home and Small Business Association.

Betty formed the DHSBA with a few business associates in 1996 to let the community at large know about small business and to help entrepreneurs and small business owners gain knowledge and assistance from other business owners who had successfully overcome the many barriers that face small business.

Betty is a Life Member of the DHSBA and runs very successful accounting and boat charter businesses in Port Perry, Ontario.

Eligibility:
Normally, The Betty Penny Scholarship is a $500.00 student award given to a graduating Grade 12 student with plans to attend university or college in the fall.

This year the award is for TWO(2) Students at $750 each, thanks to a donation from the Bank of Nova Scotia.

The applicant, or his/her parent, or a family member, or his/her friend must be a member in good standing of the Durham Home and Small Business Association and provide a reference letter from that member.

The awards committee and Betty Penny will select the winner.

May 15th

Judged by:
A committee of three DHSBA members will judge the winner using a scoring rubric.

Betty Penny will review the final three candidates and choose the award winner. The award will be presented to the successful candidate, who will attend as Betty Penny's guest, at the DHSBA Annual General Meeting in June.


The applicant's parent, family member or friend, who is a DHSBA member and providing a reference for the applicant, is ineligible to be on the selection committee because of conflict of interest.

Criteria:
The Betty Penny Scholarship will be awarded to a student who has made a difference in his community through volunteer work, showing support for his/her application with reference letters and student awards received. The applicant shall explain the way he/she acts as a role model and what he/she has done to influence others. The applicant should outline how he/she displays an entrepreneurial spirit and what valuable lessons for the future he/she has learned through work experience.
